Health Insurance that Covers Mental Health

Mental Healthcare Act (MHCA), 2017 under this, the most important provision of the new legislation is section 21(4), is the addition of “Mental Illnesses” for health insurance coverage. It was a landmark moment where India is trying to achieve universal health coverage for all the citizens of India. This article summarizes the concept of “Health Insurance” and then goes on, to talk about various insurance which includes mental health.

What is Health Insurance?

Health insurance is the policy which secures the policyholder family from medical cost which arises from an accident, uncertain illness, or any diagnosis of any disease. Nowadays several companies are offering various types of the plan which provide different benefits like cashless treatment at nay hospitals tax benefits etc.

Importance of Health Insurance

Nowadays health treatment is very expensive, even a decent hospital can finish up the savings in a few days, and being hospitalized a patient should concentrate on the recovery of health rather than hospital bills. So, for a tension-free life from the uncertain health issue, accident, or lengthy bill we must take a health insurance plan. Health insurance not only protects the policyholder but also secures the policyholder’s family.

A plan usually considers 5 members of the family they are individual, spouse, and children up to 4 children, with the fixed sum assured, it’s very cost-effective for the family because the person doesn’t have to buy an individual policy.

Private Health Insurance

Many private companies offer health insurance policies like HDFC ERGO Health Insurance and ICICI Lombard (Health Insurance), where an individual has to pay a fixed amount of money (known as a premium) for fixed periods and in against the company pool the risks for health-related expenses.

Public Health Insurance

This type of insurance is funded by the government and is aimed at providing health insurance coverage to a specific section of the population, mostly cover the underprivileged and vulnerable. Government insurance does not need any premium but they are financed through tax and the insured person may need to give a minimal amount are a premium to serve the benefits. The burden of the premium under government insurance is borne by the central or by the state government. E.g., (RSBY) Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana, Central Government Health Scheme, Employee State Insurance Scheme, and Ayushman Bharat. In Addition (GIC) General Insurance Corporation offered the most popular health insurance coverage which is known as Mediclaim policy.

What are the Basic Principles to select good Insurance?

  • Insures the risk of catastrophic or disastrous expenditure.
  • Insurance must give the benefit of service with more responsive demand or should cover the higher cost of sharing.
  • Payment method.
  • Providing an advanced cure for illness.

Majorly In-Patient hospitalization the mental disorder is cover under regular health plans. However Out-Patient provide the service of therapy or counseling or OPD benefits.

Recently one more thing has been provided under OPD covers for psychiatric illness and another ailment. This policy will offer Rs 10,000 up to under OPD covers and is available into type PB OPD family and PB OPD adult 1 and this is available in two types of the sum insured option maximum 10 lakhs and minimum 5 lakhs. There is many more plan but they are less popular like Manipal Cigna’s ProHealth Insurance and Max Bupa’s Go Active Plan, or HDFC Ergo’s Critical Illness plan- a platinum cover which Is popular for the mental disorder- Alzheimer among 15 other critical illnesses similarly Sar health and Allied Insurance star special care plan covers autism in the age of 3-25 year of age.
