“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.” – Fred Rogers.

‘A healthy mind lives in a healthy body’ says everybody but barely anyone talks about where this “healthy mind” comes from? Healthy body is attainable in a gym but what about a healthy mind? It is absolutely not something you find in a supermarket or on a website with a lot of pomp and show. In short you can’t buy a healthy mind or even a mind, can you?

You build a healthy mind by working for it and through it. A caterpillar lives inside a cocoon while it is building beautifully, it doesn’t come out of the shell and construct it. Rather, it stays inside it and comes out as a butterfly. Exactly the same way you have to collect each and every piece of your mind and build it beautiful because your mind is the only thing from which you can never come out but you can let kindness, beauty, positivity come out.

In the way of ‘building beautiful’ you sometimes need help, it can be from your parents, friends or even you may need to seek medical help. Sometimes people don’t understand what exactly you’re going through, they think you’re just stressing out or even call it a ‘bad day’. It can be a lot easier if your parents understand your battle, but it can be a whole lot of battle again to make your parents understand your situation.

Lack of education is what makes Indian parents a little conservative about the issue of mental health, but this can be tackled if confronted at the right time.

Make your mind, prepare what to say:-

Some kids feel anxious when asked to talk about their issues to their parents, sometimes they freak out completely. So, it’s important to prepare yourself beforehand. Prepare a whole dialogue, if needed.

Wait for the right time:-

Wait till the time is right. Talking to your parents about such sensitive issues requires the alignment of planets. Do not talk to them if they’re in a bad mood.

Create a whole background before talking to them:-

Indian parents believe that if you’re doing good in academics and sports and you’re also doing well in life then how can you get depressed? Make them understand that- that’s the point. Even if you’re doing well in every sphere of your life, there’s still something you feel empty about and you’re facing problems and need medical help.

Don’t get frustrated if they don’t respond the way you expected:-

Something like this is likely going to happen. But, if you’ll misbehave with your parents, things might take an ugly turn. It is better to give up at that moment and try once again.

If things don’t go well, try once again:-

Don’t think that your first try is your last one. Your parents want the best for you always. If you keep trying, they’ll eventually understand your situation. Try to understand your parents’ perspective too.

Prepare yourself, choose the right time and keep trying.
